About Smart Vision Kinderkinetics

Where Movement Meets Mindful Vision

Smart Vision Kinderkinetics is a specialised child development practice that combines science-based movement programmes, visual stimulation techniques, and parent–child interaction classes to help children grow with confidence, coordination, and joy. The goal is to support each child’s physical, perceptual, cognitive, and emotional development in a fun, nurturing environment.

What we do

Kinderkinetics

Kinderkinetics helps children (0–13) build age-appropriate neuro-motor, sensory-motor, and physical skills through purposeful play and guided activity, supporting overall wellbeing for typical and atypical development.

Visual Stimulation

Vision is more than eyesight—it’s how the brain and body interpret and respond to the world. Visual stimulation develops efficient visual skills and processing through structured, prescribed activities that integrate with other systems to become automatic.

Parent–Child Classes (Giggle & Grow)

Interactive caregiver-and-baby sessions focused on early development through guided play, sensory exploration, and shared movement—supporting bonding and whole-child development.

What is Kinderkinetics?

Kinderkinetics is a specialised paediatric movement science profession focused on the physical, motor and perceptual development of children from birth to adolescence. It uses scientifically based movement programmes to support the development of gross motor skills, coordination, balance, posture, body awareness and visual–motor integration. Through structured play and purposeful activity, Kinderkinetics helps lay the foundation for learning, sport participation and overall wellbeing.

Kinderkineticists assess each child’s developmental level and design age-appropriate, individualised programmes to strengthen underlying motor and sensory systems. Early identification and intervention are central to the profession, aiming to prevent developmental delays and reduce future academic and movement-related challenges. The approach is holistic, addressing physical development while supporting confidence, concentration and emotional growth.

The profession originated in South Africa and is uniquely recognised internationally for its specialised focus on early childhood motor development. Kinderkinetics bridges the gap between education, health and sport by ensuring that children develop strong movement foundations that allow them to reach their full potential both in the classroom and on the sports field.

All programmes offered at Smart Vision Kinderkinetics are grounded in scientific, evidence-based motor learning and child development principles. Each program is carefully designed according to a child’s age, developmental stage, individual abilities and specific needs. Our approach ensures that every session is purposeful, structured and developmentally appropriate, allowing children to build strong foundations for learning, movement and confidence.

These specialised programmes are presented by a qualified Kinderkineticist trained in paediatric movement science and sensory–motor development. As a registered practitioner with the South African Professional Institute for Kinderkinetics (SAPIK), professional standards, ethical practice and continuous development are maintained to ensure the highest quality of care.

At Smart Vision Kinderkinetics, we believe in thinking beyond traditional approaches to create innovative, effective and engaging programmes that truly make a difference. As a child development practice integrating movement and vision principles, we offer a range of specialised services tailored to support babies, toddlers and school-aged children — helping each child reach their full potential through movement, growth and development.

Kinderkinetics – Grow Through Movement

Kinderkinetics is a scientifically-based development programme focused on helping children from birth to 13 years build fundamental movement and motor skills through purposeful play and guided activity.

Movement is more than physical exercise — it is how children learn about their world. Through fun and structured activities we help children develop:

Programmes are tailored to each child’s developmental needs to support overall growth, confidence, and an active lifestyle.

Visual Stimulation – Seeing and Processing Well

At Smart Vision Kinderkinetics, vision is more than just eyesight — it is about how the brain and body work together to interpret and respond to the world. Visual stimulation supports children in using their eyes efficiently and confidently for tasks such as reading, focusing, tracking, and coordinating hand–eye movements.

Activities are play-based, engaging, and age-appropriate. Visual stimulation complements optometric care and strengthens visual pathways through movement and exploration.

Mommy & Me – Giggle & Grow

Mommy & Me (Giggle & Grow) classes are interactive parent-and-baby sessions that focus on early development through guided play, sensory exploration, and shared movement. These sessions create a joyful space for bonding while supporting whole-child development.

Giggle & Grow nurtures early development while creating meaningful connection between caregiver and child in a warm and supportive environment.

Meet Carlu van der Merwe

Founder and Owner of Smart Vision Kinderkinetics

I am first and foremost a Christian, and married to my amazing husband, Reggie. I have a caring heart and love to help people in my community where and when I can. We have an amazing little girl, Lienke, and I am so blessed to share my birthday with her.

I love coaching and playing hockey; reading educational books; designing my own new jewellery; being creative; colouring; and engaging in anything adventurous, especially with family.

I am also a passionate professional with a holistic outlook toward childhood development, and I have a special interest in children. I have been registered at SAPIK as a Kinderkineticist since 2020, and during that time I have gained experience in the Health, Optometric/Visual and Education Sector.

I have my Bachelors Degree in Human Movement Science and Psychology and a Bachelors Honors Degree in Kinderkintetics. I am also a certified paediatric movement specialist. I have specialised training (OPSIS) in Visual stimulation, primitive reflexes, and gross motor development.

I worked as a specialised Vision therapist for 3 years. My passion is helping children grow and develop towards their optimal and full potential. It is very important being proactive in preventing learning difficulties, by helping children from a very early age.

Our standards are high—grounded in up-to-date scientific knowledge, ethical practice, and transparent communication with parents and caregivers.

We Are Guided by Purpose and Passion

This practice was born from a deep love for children, especially babies and those with special needs. That love continues to guide every decision we make.
